With Kansas’ stunning road loss to a depleted Tennessee Volunteers team yesterday afternoon, the Jayhawk stranglehold on the No. 1 ranking is finally over. And with Purdue falling at Wisconsin just a day earlier, that leaves only two undefeated contenders vying for that top spot — the Kentucky Wildcats and your Texas Longhorns.

The Wildcats were pushed for 38 minutes by the Georgia Bulldogs in Rupp Arena on Saturday, while Texas logged double-digit victories against Colorado and on the road against Arkansas. The Longhorns already had eight first place votes in last week’s AP Poll, while one coach tabbed Texas as the best team in the land. Kentucky managed just one vote for first, in the Associated Press rankings.

All signs point to the first-ever No. 1 ranking in school history for the Longhorns. This afternoon, we’ll find out if it really happens.

It’s not exactly a night that will keep you glued to the couch, which might seem obvious when Ohio State and Illinois play in the headliner…

Top 25 Action

Ohio State (13-3 overall, 3-2 Big 10) at #25 Illinois (15-3, 3-2) | 7 PM ET, ESPN
Bruce Weber and the Illini have bounced back from an awful 2007-08 season much faster than anyone might have expected, but a tough stretch to open conference play has left them in the middle of the standings. Ohio State finds itself in the middle of that same pack, but enters tonight’s game in Champaign as winners of five straight against Illinois. The Buckeyes will have their work cut out for them, however, as they are ranked 250th in the country in offensive rebounding and are facing the nation’s 10th-ranked defense.

North Carolina State (10-5 overall, 1-2 ACC) at #2 Duke (16-1, 3-0) | 8 ET, ESPN Full Court
Duke has been playing absolutely lights out as of late, most recently shutting down Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor. They are sporting an NCAA-best +0.345 efficiency differential, just ahead of their Tobacco Road rival, North Carolina. In simpler terms, the Blue Devils outscore their opponents by 0.345 points per possession, which means that even if the Wolfpack can slow things down to their tempo, they will only lose by……approximately 22 points. Uh oh.

Big 12 Games

Colorado (8-8 overall, 0-2 Big 12) at Texas Tech (10-7, 0-2) | 8 PM ET, ESPN Full Court
It’s a game matching two teams that have the potential to be the absolute worst squads in the Big 12! If that doesn’t scream “must watch,” I’m not sure what else does. Perhaps a marathon of the Ryan Seacrest-produced reality show, Momma’s Boys?

Around the country

Tennessee (11-5 overall, 2-1 SEC) at Vanderbilt (12-5, 1-2) | 9 PM ET, ESPN
Last year, these two teams put on one of the most exciting games of the season, as the Commodores eked out a three-point win over their cross-state rivals, who had just reached No. 1 for the first time in school history. This year, there’s not nearly as much on the line, but excitement is still on tap. Just ask stat guru Ken Pomeroy, who hopes his new FanMatch feature can pinpoint the most intriguing match-ups of the night. And according to Mr. Pomeroy’s brand-spanking-new ranking system, this particular Battle of Tennessee has a 71.7% chance of kicking major ass. Guaranteed.

To count down the days to the Big Dance, we’ll be unveiling the top ten buzzer beaters from the NCAA tournament each morning until the first game. So when you roll out of bed next Thursday, crusty-eyed and anxious for wall-to-wall basketball action, you’ll be met with the early treat of the #1 NCAA buzzer beater of all-time.

This morning we start with #10, which happened just two seasons ago in Greensboro, North Carolina. A lot of pundits had called Tennessee overrated as a 2-seed that had lost four of their last six games, and Bruce Pearl’s team wasn’t doing anything to prove them wrong. Although the Volunteers should have been able to put away 15th-seeded Winthrop early, their largest lead of the game was only six points, and that came just eight minutes into it. But with just 2.9 seconds to go in a tie game, Chris Lofton threw up a shot from just inside the arc to put the Vols up for good.

While the shot didn’t technically come at the buzzer — Winthrop would miss their own game-tying attempt as the horn sounded — it was one of the most exciting finishes in recent memory. And it’s also today’s YouTube highlight, checking in at #10 on the countdown of Top Ten March Madness Buzzer Beaters.

With Selection Sunday fast approaching, Andy Glockner’s Bubble Watch is now being updated twice a week. Today’s edition suggests that the Big 12 could still grab six bids, but that a worst-case scenario involves only four teams dancing. Glockner includes Texas Tech as a fringe team today, pointing out that the Red Raiders have a huge chance to make hay with a schedule that ends against the Longhorns, Aggies, Bears, and Jayhawks.

Tom Izzo hates the Big Ten Network. You’re not the only one, Coach.

A link that comes to us via the good folks at Rush the Court is flick.com user Sammy8146’s photo album from last night’s Tennessee-Vanderbilt game. Memorial Gym is a place that I can’t wait to catch a game in, and the energy in that building last night was incredible. Congrats to the ‘Dores on a solid, solid win.

Jeff at March Madness All Season took the time to project final conference standings, putting Texas undefeated the rest of the regular season with a loss in the conference tourney semis. I’m still trying to figure out who exactly he thinks will beat the Horns in that semifinal, as either I suck at math or things don’t add up correctly. But regardless of number flubs, give the man his props for actually trying to sort out the bloated mess that is made up of slots four through ten in the league.
