A scary, scary moment in the Raptors game in Atlanta last night when T.J. Ford was fouled hard by Al Horford and fell straight to the court, slamming his head. T.J. was carted off on a stretcher, but has since been released from the hospital and is cleared to play. I’m guessing he won’t be right back out there, but it’s good to know things are looking up after seeing that frightening footage last night. So much for St. Mary’s being ranked when they come to town. The Gaels ran into Southern Illinois on the wrong night, losing 71-56 to a team that had almost no offense over their first six games. All this really does to Texas is give a slight ding on the RPI later in the season, but it’s better to be playing a tough, one-loss St. Mary’s squad than a 16-loss Prairie View A&M. Don’t ask me how I missed this in SI’s weekly power rankings last week, but apparently the Penn students brought their A-game for Tyler Hansbrough and UNC. They blew up pictures of his mother, who was a former Miss Missouri, and waved copies of this horrible senior picture collage. I pulled the photo from Tyler50.com, the official website of Mr. Hansbrough. Why, oh why would you put something this hilariously awkward on the internet when you are a college athlete? I half-expect to find Uncle Rico’s glamor shots if I keep clicking around long enough. Chris Low at ESPN.com has a good feature on A.J. Ogilvy over at Vanderbilt. After seeing the Commodores shock a lot of folks last year, I thought they just needed a good inside presence to help out Shan Foster and get them over the hump. There was some below-the-radar buzz on the Aussie before he hit the college hardwood, but I wasn’t sure he’d be the answer as only a freshman. It turns out that Ogilvy is just as good as advertised, if not better, and has Vandy poised to be one of the top three or four teams in the SEC. Finally, some more action on the tube for hoopsheads tonight. Cincy takes on Xavier and former OU guard Drew Lavender in the Crosstown Shootout (6 PM, ESPN2). Check out the 7-1 Musketeers if you haven’t had a chance yet, as they should absolutely school the ‘Cats. If you don’t believe me or Chris Low about the Ogilvy kid, watch Vandy hunt for a road win at DePaul (7 PM, ESPN Classic). And if you remember when UMass was solid and the A-10 was a part of the Big Monday package, reminisce as the Minutemen host BC (8 PM, ESPNU). |
It’s time for the second installment of the four-part “Meet the freshman” series, and for the second straight day, the Austin-American Statesman provides us with a story about one of the newest Longhorns. But while yesterday’s news regarding Dogus Balbay was troubling, today fans learn that Gary Johnson has been cleared to play in the exhibition. Johnson was the prize jewel of Rick Barnes’ 2007 recruiting class, sitting in the top 25 of every major reporting outlet’s rankings. An undersized post player at 6-foot, 6-inches, Gary is known for his incredible post moves, constant motor, and sweet touch from the blocks. Sound familiar? It should. Johnson’s game has drawn comparisons to P.J. Tucker for some time, and now that he’s donning burnt orange, journalists and sportscasters will surely rehash that point. Gary played his high school ball at Aldine in Houston, where the Mustangs reached the Class 5A Region III semifinals in each of the last two seasons. Johnson was also a member of the insanely loaded Houston Hoops AAU team, which included Jai Lucas (Florida), Mike Singletary (Texas Tech), and Anthony Jones (Yates HS, Baylor commit). Uncertainty surrounded Johnson all summer after it was announced he was suffering from a heart condition. News from the Forty Acres came out in trickles, as the basketball program kept tight lips regarding the situation, citing privacy concerns. First, there were whispers that GJ was taking part in individual workouts. Then, the Statesman announced he was cleared for team practice. With this latest bit of news, there is a very strong chance that Johnson will be ready before non-conference play is over. Conditioning will likely be an issue for the first few months, as Johnson added weight during the sedentary phase following the initial diagnosis. But this Texas team is in strong need of a presence in the frontcourt, and Johnson — owner of a 7’1″ wingspan — is the leading candidate. Once he gets up to full speed, he’ll likely lead the team in rebounds and will be one of the top scorers. Perhaps most important for fans to remember in all of this is that Texas will exercise extreme caution. Johnson is going to be re-evaluated after Friday’s game to see how his body handles the added stress of game conditions. Even if he’s then cleared for the regular season, doctors and coaches will still take things slowly. But when Gary and the medical staff think it’s safe enough for him to take the court full-time, he is guaranteed to immediately and dramatically improve the team. |
Scouts note that his rebounding skills are remarkably strong for a six-footer, and are high on his ability to break down defenses off the dribble. With D.J. Augustin also constantly attacking the defense, the similar style of play ensures that there won’t be a drop-off when Balbay spells the starter. The similarities between Dogus and D.J. don’t end there, as reports constantly mention Balbay’s athleticism and ability to hang in the air, drawing fouls and executing late passes under the rim. |
Dexter Pittman has been seen around campus wearing the stylish kind of boot that Matt Hill was sporting for most of last season. No word yet on whether or not he’ll be available in time for the season opener on November 12th. But don’t get your panties in a twist quite yet if your visions of a more physical Texas team are disappearing from your mind’s eye. Longhorn fans may remember that A.J. Abrams spent most of the 2006 summer semester on crutches, and then dropped 28 points in the second game of the season. So, here’s to optimism. And whether the news be good or bad, you’ll find it here as soon as we know more. |
