Stetson Hatters (0-0) at #7/#8 Texas Longhorns (0-0)
Tip: 7 P.M. Central | TV: None

After six long months, the sweet sound of sneakers on hardwood has returned. And while we’ve had to bide our time all week with such thrilling match-ups as Michigan Tech/Michigan and UCLA/Prairie View A&M, tonight the Longhorn faithful can finally enjoy the return of their own basketball team.

Sure, the mighty Stetson Hatters provide as much of a threat as crabgrass in the Sahara. But with Rick Barnes opting to forgo exhibitions this year in favor of closed scrimmages with Davidson and Gonzaga, tonight’s contest provides the first chance for Texas fans to get a look at the 2008-09 Longhorns. And in a year where Barnes is looking to fill the vacancy of yet another top-ten NBA draft pick, there are a ton of questions that Texas fans want answered.

Crazy hat. Giant nose. Lack of teeth. Intimidating.

About the opponent

The Hatters are coming off a mediocre season in which they finished 15-16 and lost to Gardner Webb in the first round of the Atlantic Sun tournament. The efficiency numbers from last year’s team were actually much worse than their near-.500 record would indicate. Stetson ranked 309th in Division I basketball in offensive efficiency, while their adjusted defensive numbers put them at 205th in the nation.

One thing the Hatters do have going for them is experience, as last year’s team featured only one senior. The return of guards A.J. Smith and Garfield Blair — who averaged a combined 60 minutes per game last year — should provide some stability in the backcourt. The most reliable forward for Stetson last year was Sheldon Oliver, who checks in at only 6-foot, 5-inches. This lack of a true inside presence could cause major match-up problems against a Texas lineup that is very deep in the frontcourt.

What to look for

There are a number of questions floating around at the start of every season, and with the loss of D.J. Augustin, the 2008-09 season is no exception. Here are just a few of the many things on our mind as the team takes the court tonight.

Who handles the ball? – With Dogus Balbay serving the final game of his suspension for playing on a team which paid some players, the point guard duties are up in the air. Both A.J. Abrams and Justin Mason have experience at the one, but neither is a true floor general. Seeing who gets the bulk of the minutes running the offense will give fans an idea of what to expect if Balbay struggles in his first college season or runs into foul trouble somewhere down the line.

Will the new three-point line affect Abrams? – The NCAA has moved the three-point line back this season from its previous distance of 19 feet, 9 inches to a more daunting 20 feet, 9 inches. For Texas, the player who could possibly suffer most from the change is senior guard Abrams. There’s no question the little shooting guard has the range to hit from further out. But after three seasons developing his game at the old distance, will there be an adjustment period for Abrams this year?

How ready is Matt Hill? – The forward from Nebraska has been a huge question mark for Texas the last two seasons, with injuries crippling his freshman year and completely erasing the 2007-08 campaign. As a redshirt sophomore, Hill has the skills to make a quick impact, but questions about his durability still linger. Tonight, fans will not only get a chance to see how he fits into the crowded rotation in the frontcourt, but also to see if he seems at all hesitant after struggling with so many injuries.

What shape will the lineup take? – This is a question that will certainly not be answered tonight, as Rick Barnes will likely experiment with different combinations all the way into conference play. But this Texas team is incredibly deep, and has the ability to go both big and small. The fact that both Damion James and Connor Atchley can play well both inside and out is also an incredible asset which lends itself to some exciting possibilities for which five Longhorns see the floor.

Hansbrough’s excessive brooding triples after leg injury

Andy Katz reported on Friday that reigning National Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough will miss at least two weeks with an injured shin. UNC head coach Roy Williams confirmed that Hansbrough’s bone scan showed a stress injury, but no sign of fracture. It’s unclear if the setback will cause The Great White Hope to miss any regular season games, as team doctors will re-evaluate the situation in two weeks.

There is a distinct possibility that Texas and top-ranked North Carolina could meet in the championship game of the Maui Invitational on November 26th. And while the Longhorns are a top ten team according to both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Coaches Poll, the Tar Heels at full strength are without a doubt in another stratosphere. Williams’ team will be without lockdown defender Marcus Ginyard in Maui, so a recovering Hansbrough could give a little more hope to a bracket of challengers that also includes ninth-ranked Notre Dame.

The Tar Heels open the season at 4 P.M. (EST) on November 15th against the Penn Quakers

Last night

Daniel Gibson went absolutely nuts in the first half for Cleveland, scoring 11 points in his first five minutes on the court en route to a 96-79 victory over visiting Charlotte. D-Gib led all scorers in the game, dropping in 25 points including a hefty 4-of-6 line from behind the arc. On the other side of the court, rookie D.J. Augustin hit double-digits with 12 points for the Bobcats in his NBA debut. The little point guard picked up where he left off in college, working his way to the charity stripe for six attempts, all of which he made.

Tonight

If you aren’t escorting your little ghouls and goblins around the neighborhood or checking out Saw 37 at the megaplex, there’s a ton of NBA action on tap tonight. Costumes not included.

LaMarcus Aldridge and the Trail Blazers hope to bounce back from the thumping they received at the hands of the Lakers on opening night, but the road doesn’t get any easier when the Spurs visit the Rose Garden. Portland will be without big man Greg Oden, who played about 2.7 seconds on Tuesday night before his bones disintegrated into a pile of dust. Front office brass will not confirm the rumor that Abe Vigoda has been signed to replace him. (9:30 PM CDT, ESPN)

In action already underway, the 76ers lead the Knicks at halftime, but former Horn Royal Ivey has yet to see the court.

Last night

The Oklahoma City Stolen Team started its new season with a home loss to the Bucks, 98-87. Kevin Durant was 0-for-3 from long range in the game, but finished with 12 points and three boards in 33 minutes.

In his Indiana debut, T.J. Ford struggled a bit with foul trouble, limiting him to 30 minutes on the night. Ford still finished with ten points on 50% shooting, however, and added 5 assists in a 100-94 road loss to Pistons.

Maurice Evans led the Atlanta Hawks with 42 minutes, but finished with only eight points and eight rebounds in a 99-85 victory over the Orlando Magic. Despite eating up a lot of minutes for the Hawks, Mo had a bit of a shaky night, shooting 27% from the field and turning the ball over four times.

The L.A. Lakers absolutely destroyed the Clippers, giving Chris Mihm ample time to dominate his crosstown rivals in the fourth quarter. With the game out of reach, Mihm quickly piled up ten points and two rebounds in only nine minutes of action.

Royal Ivey was the only active 76er who didn’t see action in a 95-84 home loss to the Raptors.

Tonight

Texas backcourt stars D.J. Augustin and Daniel Gibson are opponents when Charlotte travels to Cleveland to take on the Cavs. It’s both the season opener for the Bobcats and the NBA debut for rookie Augustin, who will be backing up point guard Raymond Felton. (6 PM CDT, Sport South/FSN Ohio)

Last night

Portland hoped to debut a young, fearsome lineup this year with Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, Travis Outlaw and LaMarcus Aldridge. But an early injury to the 47-year old Oden scuttled plans and the stifling Lakers defense held the Blazers in check most of the night. Los Angeles cruised to a 96-76 victory, with former Horn Chris Mihm providing an easy bucket and a block in mop-up duty. Aldridge had a tough night in the loss, shooting only 33% from the field and finishing with eight points and four boards.

Cleveland gave the defending champs a run for their money in Boston, even taking a lead to the locker room at the half. But the Celtics turned it on in the final 24 and iced away the game with a last second dunk, winning 90-85 at TD Banknorth Garden. Daniel Gibson came off the bench for the Cavs, scoring six and dishing out three dimes in his 22 minutes of play. D-Gib only had two attempts from long range and missed both.

Tonight

Royal Ivey debuts in the City of Brotherly Love when the Philadelphia 76ers host Atlantic Division rival Toronto. (5 PM CDT)

Atlanta travels to the horribly-named Amway Arena to take on Orlando tonight, giving former Longhorn Maurice Evans a chance to enact a bit of revenge against his old team. (6 PM CDT)

The offseason saw T.J. Ford cross the border and join the Pacers, where the point guard will no longer have to jostle for playing time with Jose Calderon. Tonight he debuts with Indiana in a road game against the Detroit Pistons. (7 PM CDT)

Remember when David Stern thought it would be cool to steal a franchise away from a large market and move them to a “city” in a dust bowl solely to appease his good buddy? And then he let them choose a lame mascot and design uniforms better suited for Rainbow Brite? I’m thinking Kevin Durant might be a little pissed about that when the Oklahoma City Thunder host Milwaukee tonight. (7 PM CDT)

Chris Mihm and his 6 Million Dollar Ankle look for some PT when the Lakers “travel” to the other bench at Staples Center in a match-up against the cross-town Clips. (9:30 PM CDT, ESPN)
